Porsche Boss Confirms 928's Spiritual Successor with Panamera Coupe, Mulls Sedan and Sports Car

When it comes to future models, nothing is written on stone, especially when we are living what the Chinese like to call, "interesting times", as carmakers frequently make new plans and discard old ones, depending on how the economy is doing.

As far as Porsche's future is concerned, the Stuttgart-based company is already in the final development phase of two brand new models, the mid-size Macan crossover and the 918 Spyder hybrid supercar, both of which will launch next year.

Speaking to Autonews Europe, Porsche boss Matthias Mueller talked about the company's plans and the models that are currently under discussion.

Scoop: New Porsche Macan SUV Drives Around for the Camera

The next big, or shall we say, smaller thing to come from Porsche is a second crossover model that will be positioned under the Cayenne and with which the German company will fight for sales in the mid-size segment rivaling the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK.

The Stuttgart-based automaker has already picked a name for its "baby" SUV that will be known as the Macan.

Porsche CEO Says Sport Turismo to Influence Future Models’ Design, Hints at New 'Ring Record Time

Talk to most people about the current Porsche Panamera's biggest flaw, and they are very likely to point towards its exterior design. Porsche’s foray in the segment may be a fine sports saloon featuring a nicely crafted interior, but its bodywork is unexciting to some, ugly to most.

Company CEO Matthias Muller talked to Motor Trend at the Paris Auto Show and said some very interesting things about the company's future models.

First of all, Muller revealed that the head- and taillights of the Panamera Sport Turismo concept, which was displayed in Paris, will gradually be applied to all Porsche models, starting with the Macan compact luxury SUV that’s due next year.

New Porsche Macan Compact SUV Scooped in Pictures and on Video, First Look at the Interior

A cunningly disguised prototype of the all-new Porsche Macan compact crossover has made another appearance for the camera revealing its interior for the very first time.

From the spy shots, it looks like the Macan will feature a similar but not the same dashboard design to the second generation of the larger Cayenne SUV with a prominent center console sporting a large touch screen flanked by vertical air vents.

On the outside, compared to the previous test car and aside from the faux lights and rear window panels that remain, this prototype of the Macan featured larger wheels and rims, aluminum roof rails and quad instead of dual exhaust pipes hinting at a more powerful engine under the hood.

Speaking about engines, the Audi Q5-sized crossover will be the first Porsche since the 924/944/968 series models to be offered with four-cylinder powerplants, and in particular, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline and diesel units producing somewhere around 240hp and 200hp respectively.

A high-ranking Porsche official has reiterated that the company has no plans whatsoever to expand its automobile range with a car costing less than the firm's current base model, the Boxster roadster, which starts from €48,291 in Germany, £37,589 in the UK and U$49,500 in the U.S.

"To build a Porsche for 30,000 euros [$38,000] currently doesn't fit our brand," Porsche's head of sales and marketing Bernhard Maier told Automotive News.

SCOOP: This is the New Porsche Macan Compact SUV

No more hiding under the body panels of the Audi Q5 for the Porsche Macan as the Stuttgart automaker's engineers took a completed prototype for a ride in Germany and our spy photographers were on hand to capture it on film.

Lifting a page from the 911 prototypes, Porsche's people added some goofy-looking head- and tail lamp covers mimicking the style of the larger Cayenne to confuse us, but the rest of the car matches the teaser sketch released by the company in February during the announcement of the name.

The overall exterior styling is very close to the Cayenne but the Macan is smaller in size and features a swoopier roofline.

The Macan shares its platform architecture with the next Audi Q5, which means its key dimensions will be similar to Ingolstadt's crossover model.

Porsche Names its Upcoming Compact SUV "Macan", Releases First Official Teaser and Video

As it turns out, Porsche won't be keeping the name Cajun for the production version of its upcoming junior SUV as the Stuttgart-based automaker announced today that it will be named "Macan". Porsche says that the name is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger.

“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche”, said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Porsche. “The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations.”
